Australian Camp is at the height of 2,400 m from sea level. It is situated northwest of Pokhara. This camp offers a piling view of stunning snow-capped mountains such as Annapurna Mountain Range, Manaslu Mountain Range, Machhapuchhre, etc. It also provides a beautiful view of the village surrounded by green hills. Why it is called ‘Australian Camp’?

Previously, among the locals, the place is known as “Thulo Kharka”. It means big pasture. The place was famous for buffalo and herders from the village near the place like Dhampus village. Before the early ’90s, the place was unknown to the trekkers. Meanwhile, places like Phedi, Dhampus, Derali, Landruk, were known as being in the route of Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It is believed that during the 80s, citizens from Austria has found the place beautiful. And they used to come here often for camping. Thus, the people initiate to call the place “Austrian Camp”. But for the local people, it was difficult to pronounce that so they started calling it Australian Camp. So this is why it is called ‘Australian Camp’.

Australian Camp and Dhampus Village Distance:

Pokhara to Australian Base Camp distance is about 28.4 km through Banglung Rajmarg and around 1-hour drive far. The distance from Kathmandu to the Australian Camp and Dhampus Village is more as the journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara adds up. It is approximately 230 km far from Kathmandu and needs about a 7-8 hour drive to reach Kathmandu.  To reach up to the hill of Australian Camp we need to walk the distance of about 1-2 hours.
